Red Damask with Single Lotus Medallion
2018-01-06

Late Tang dynasty
Lcm;Wcm(1119)
This damask piece consists of a single floral medallion with accessory flowers. The main motif is actually a frontal lotus blossom, with depiction of lotus seeds, petals, and flying butterflies. Technically speaking, the draft needed for single medallion is two times as large as that for dual medallions, and four times as for quadruple medallions, thus requires complicated craftsmanship. During the Dali era of the Tang dynasty, it was even prohibited from production, demonstrating the priceless value of this piece.
