L12.5cm; H7cm

Tiny shoes like these are for bound feet, often referred to as "three inch golden lotus." The tradition of foot binding is believed to have started during the Five Dynasties period.Archeological evidence has shown that small shoes with pointed uplifted toesfor bound feet were in use during the Song dynasty. This pair is typical of these worn by Qing dynasty women in terms of size and shape, which can be as small as 3 inches, have pointed toes and slightly raised heels. The decoration is polychrome embroidery with goldfish and lotus on a blue satin ground, simple and refined. (XY)
